You are about to stroll through not only a beautiful plant, flower, tree, etc. garden, but also an interspersed "math" garden made up of beautiful geometrical shapes known as polyhedrons. These beautiful and rare
geometrical shapes are know as the
5 Platonic Solids and the 13 Archimedean Solids.
Click on a path to begin, and enjoy your stroll through this most beautiful "POLYHEDRON GARDEN"
Platonic Solids
In three-dimensional space, a Platonic solid is a regular, convex polyhedron. It is constructed by congruent regular polygonal faces with the same number of faces meeting at each vertex. Five solids meet those criteria, and each is named after its number of faces.
Plato identified fire atoms with the tetrahedron, earth atoms with the cube, air atoms with the octahedron, water atoms with the icosahedron, and the cosmos atoms with the dodecahedron.
Tetrahedron
A three-dimensional geometric figure with four triangular faces.
Octahedron
A three-dimensional geometric figure with eight triangular faces.
Cube
A regular solid having six congruent square faces
Dodecahedron
A solid figure having twelve plane faces. A regular dodecahedron has regular pentagons as faces.
Icosahedron
A solid figure having 20 faces. The faces of a regular icosahedron are equilateral triangles
ARCHIMEDEAN SOLIDS
In geometry, an Archimedean solid is one of the 13 solids first enumerated by Archimedes. They are the semi-regular convex polyhedrons composed of regular polygons meeting in identical vertices, excluding the 5 Platonic solids (which are composed of only one type of polygon) and excluding the prisms and antiprisms.
ICOSIDODECAHEDRON
AN ICOSIDODECAHEDRON IS A POLYHEDRON WITH TWENTY TRIANGULAR FACES AND TWELVE PENTAGONAL FACES.
CUBOCTAHEDRON
A CUBOCTAHEDRON IS A POLYHEDRON WITH 8 TRIANGULAR FACES AND 6 SQUARE FACES.
RHOMBICOSIDODECAHEDRON
The rhombicosidodecahedron, or small rhombicosidodecahedron, is an Archimedean solid, one of thirteen convex isogonal nonprismatic solids constructed of two or more types of regular polygon faces.
RHOMBICUBOCTAHEDRON
THE RHOMBICUBOCTAHEDRON, OR SMALL RHOMBICUBOCTAHEDRON, IS AN ARCHIMEDEAN SOLID WITH EIGHT TRIANGULAR AND EIGHTEEN SQUARE FACES.
SNUB CUBE
THE SNUB CUBE, OR SNUB CUBOCTAHEDRON, IS AN ARCHIMEDEAN SOLID WITH 38 FACES: 6 SQUARES AND 32 EQUILATERAL TRIANGLES.
TRUNCATED CUBOCTAHEDRON
THE TRUNCATED CUBOCTAHEDRON IS AN ARCHIMEDEAN SOLID. IT HAS 12 SQUARE FACES, 8 REGULAR HEXAGONAL FACES, 6 REGULAR OCTAGONAL FACES, 48 VERTICES AND 72 EDGES.
TRUNCATED CUBE
THE TRUNCATED CUBE, OR TRUNCATED HEXAHEDRON, IS AN ARCHIMEDEAN SOLID. IT HAS 14 REGULAR FACES (6 OCTAGONAL AND 8 TRIANGULAR), 36 EDGES, AND 24 VERTICES
TRUNCATED DODECAHEDRON
THE TRUNCATED DODECAHEDRON IS AN ARCHIMEDEAN SOLID. IT HAS 12 REGULAR DECAGONAL FACES, 20 REGULAR TRIANGULAR FACES, 60 VERTICES AND 90 EDGES.
TRUNCATED ICOSAHEDRON
THE TRUNCATED ICOSAHEDRON IS AN ARCHIMEDEAN SOLID, ONE OF 13 CONVEX ISOGONAL NONPRISMATIC SOLIDS WHOSE FACES ARE TWO OR MORE TYPES OF REGULAR POLYGONS.
TRUNCATED ICOSIDODECAHEDRON
THE TRUNCATED ICOSIDODECAHEDRON IS AN ARCHIMEDEAN SOLID, ONE OF THIRTEEN CONVEX ISOGONAL NONPRISMATIC SOLIDS CONSTRUCTED BY TWO OR MORE TYPES OF REGULAR POLYGON FACES.
TRUNCATED OCTAHEDRON
THE TRUNCATED OCTAHEDRON IS AN ARCHIMEDEAN SOLID. IT HAS 14 FACES (8 REGULAR HEXAGONAL AND 6 SQUARE), 36 EDGES, AND 24 VERTICES. SINCE EACH OF ITS FACES HAS POINT SYMMETRY THE TRUNCATED OCTAHEDRON IS A ZONOHEDRON.
TRUNCATED TETRAHEDRON
THE TRUNCATED TETRAHEDRON IS AN ARCHIMEDEAN SOLID. IT HAS 4 REGULAR HEXAGONAL FACES, 4 EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE FACES, 12 VERTICES AND 18 EDGES (OF TWO TYPES).
